Are tanning beds suitable for everyone?

1Views

Tanning beds simulate sunlight using artificial ultraviolet (UV) rays, causing the skin to produce melanin and achieve a tanned appearance. However, they are not suitable for everyone, and some people may face higher health risks.

People who are not suitable for using tanning beds:

- People with sensitive skin or who are prone to sunburn

Those with fair skin (Fitzpatrick types I–II) are more susceptible to sunburn or erythema due to having less melanin.

People with photosensitive diseases (such as lupus erythematosus or solar dermatitis) may experience skin inflammation.

People at high risk of skin cancer

- People with a personal or family history of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, etc.

- people with precancerous lesions (such as solar keratosis).

Teenagers (under 18 years old)

Teenagers have thinner skin and are more sensitive to ultraviolet damage, which may increase the risk of skin cancer in adulthood.

Some countries, such as the United States and Australia, have enacted laws prohibiting minors from using tanning beds.

Pregnant women

Hormonal changes during pregnancy may aggravate chloasma (pregnancy spots) and UV exposure can exacerbate pigmentation issues.

High-temperature environments (such as tanning cabins) may affect the health of the foetus and are therefore recommended to be avoided.

People who have recently received medical beauty treatments

The skin barrier is fragile after laser hair removal, chemical peels and microneedling, so UV exposure can easily cause pigmentation or darkening.

Situations where it can be used with caution:

Healthy adults without the above risks can use it moderately, but frequency must be strictly controlled (no more than twice a week for no more than 10 minutes at a time).

Take precautions before use, such as applying tanning lotion and wearing goggles, and moisturise and repair afterwards.

Safer tanning alternatives

- Imitation tanning products (tanning lotion/spray containing DHA).

- Bronzer/instant tanning cream (no UV risk).
